The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, has launched the Digital Literacy for Ikorodu Trade (DLIT) programme to equip traders in its host communities with vital digital skills. This initiative, a flagship of the university’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), targets the communities of Lambo Lasunwon, Araromi, and Okegbegun, with 20 participants carefully selected through a rigorous screening process.
Running from 11 April to 2 May 2026 at LASUSTECH’s Digital Learning Centre, the four-weekend programme offers hands-on training in brand building, digital marketing, optimisation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, and basic graphic design. The initiative is structured to hold on weekends, making it convenient for participants, particularly traders, to attend while managing their daily business activities. Its goal is to help them establish a strong digital presence and enhance business performance in today’s competitive marketplace.
In his keynote address, “Fulfilling the Mandate of Community Service through Digital Entrepreneurship,” The Vice Chancellor Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya congratulated participants and described the programme as timely. He emphasized that traditional analogue business methods are no longer sufficient in the digital era, noting that literacy in digital tools is now essential for survival and growth. He highlighted the evolution of business communication from oral exchanges to advanced digital platforms, including cryptocurrency and online transactions.
Prof. Odusanya explained that digital literacy encompasses the effective use of computers and mobile devices to communicate, create content, store information, and reach wider audiences. He stressed that manual methods are limited compared to digital approaches, which enable faster transactions, greater accuracy, and broader market access. He further noted that the DLIT programme is designed to reduce poverty and unemployment while fostering community development through improved business efficiency.
The initiative aligns with LASUSTECH’s IMPACT vision, particularly the “T” for Town and Gown relationship, which bridges university expertise with community needs. Prof. Odusanya expressed gratitude to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for donating the Digital Learning Centre commissioned in 2025, now serving as the hub for this training. He also commended the lead trainers, Dr. Steve Adesemoye and Dr. Stephen Aderibigbe, for their dedication.
Reaffirming the university’s commitment to CSR, Dr. Ademola Aderogba, Dean of Students’ Affairs, underscored the importance of sustaining mutual relationships with host communities. The lead trainers announced that outstanding participants would receive follow-up support beyond the four-week programme, stressing that universities exist not only to educate and research but also to serve communities through initiatives like DLIT.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Omotolani Abigail expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity, describing the programme as transformative for her small-scale business. She pledged to maximize the training to scale up her trade and strengthen her digital presence.
